Ibero Massa Florestal

Ibero Massa Florestal produces certified biochar from acacia and eucalyptus residues via slow pyrolysis for agricultural and forestry use in Portugal. Certified under the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard for 1,000-year persistence, it targets 112,500 tCO₂eq sequestered over five years.

The present project, developed by Ibero Massa Florestal, aims to implement a sustainable biochar production system through slow pyrolysis of acacia and eucalyptus biomass residues. The objective is to generate certified biochar for agricultural and industrial use, while permanently removing carbon from the atmosphere through stable carbon sinks, The project will increase carbon sequestration by working the produced biochar into different matrices to create a long-term carbon storage with a persistence of up to 1000 years as according to the Global Biochar C-Sink Standard. Without the project, no C-sink would be created since feedstock acacia and eucalyptus wood does not constitute a long-term carbon reservoir. Over the next 5 years, Ibero Massa Florestal aims to establish a total of approximately 112.500 tCO₂eq of permanent carbon sinks through the application of certified biochar produced via slow pyrolysis. The biochar will be applied primarily in agricultural and forestry soils in Portugal, ensuring long-term carbon stability in line with EBC guidelines. This corresponds to an average permanent carbon sink of 22.500 tCO₂eq per year. The sink potential is calculated based on projected biochar production volumes, measured carbon content, and carbon sink efficiency according to the standards referenced in chapters 4.2 and 5.3 of this PDD.
