PyroCCS and Circular Carbon

PyroCCS and Circular Carbon Pathways partner with local Indian organizations to pyrolyze agricultural waste into biochar across six sites. Using the Artisan Pro standard, the project creates long-term soil carbon storage, targeting 160,000 tons of CO2eq sequestered over five years.

PyroCCS and Circular Carbon

PyroCCS has partnered with Circular Carbon Pathways (CCP) on this project. CCP, an Austria-based developer and operator of industrial and distributed biochar projects in the Global South, acts as the carbon credit commercialization partner, leading buyer outreach and the sale of certified C-Sink credits to international buyers. On the ground, PyroCCS works with various locally deeply rooted implementation partners across India who procure biomasses from farmers and other biomass owners and pyrolyze this biomass in geographically suitable, distributed biochar kilns — from Kontiki-type flame curtain kilns to advanced, sensor-monitored kiln designs that log process data for verification. The project now spans 6 sites across Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Punjab. A variety of waste biomasses is utilized depending on the geography, among others rice straw or cotton stalk that is being burnt on fields and is causing hazardous levels of pollution across the country. All implementation partners develop products and sell the biochar as a value-added product to contribute to long-term financial project sustainability and soil impact. PyroCCS solely applies the advanced Artisan Pro standard in its projects. We value the power of collaboration by running this model with the following implementation partners. TEO Ventures: under its SunCarbon brand, TEO develops high-value biochar-based agri-inputs, including a wide range of soil enhancers and fertilisers. One of India´s leading innovators in biochar soil application, having run trials across many crops and challenging soils, TEO makes, monitors and monetizes biochar. ASQI: Advancing Sustainability, Quality & Impact focuses on AI- and satellite-imagery-driven climate smart agriculture, enabling crop residue management and food processing waste utilisation. They work closely with farmers to improve soil health and fertility and to raise climate resilience through better water and nutrient retention. Energy Harvest Charitable Trust (EH): EH runs Paddy Straw-to-Biochar projects to help curb stubble burning, a major cause of North India´s winter smog and its health hazards, with the dual objective of improving soil fertility and farmers´ income. The Bamboo Experts (TBE): TBE positions value-added biochar as the alternative to chemical fertiliser and the path to quality food. The project will increase carbon sequestration by working the produced biochar into different matrixes and in this way create a long-term carbon storage with a persistence of up to 1000 years as according to the Global Artisan C-Sink Standard. Without the project, no C-sink would be created since the various agricultural residue, invasive/encroaching and other waste biomasses do not constitute a long-term carbon reservoir. In the initial 5 years of the project, we expect carbon sequestration of approximately 160,000 tons CO2eq in total or 320,000 tons CO2eq / year.
